I have always been interested and intrigued by photography. Taking the Introduction to Photography class made me aware of many aspects of the art that I was once oblivious to. I now have a greater appreciation for film photography because of the amount of effort and time that must be put into every photograph. From ensuring the picture is taken using the most accurate shutter speed and aperture, to correctly processing and developing the rolls of film and even printing a photograph using the most flattering filter, film photography in itself is truly an art.
Looking back at my black and white portfolio I have noticed several things about the way I photograph. Firstly I have realized that I have an eye for detail. My pictures can vary from concentrating on a specific, isolated object or capturing an entire general area; nevertheless capturing the detail and precision in the scene is always my main objective. Additionally the vast majority of my photographs are focused sharply. I think I do this because I believe an image is at its best when it has a sharp element in it, thus I have a preference for sharp images. Also my pictures have a strong geometrical presence. Unintentionally I realized that many of my pictures showcase strong lines or the main feature of the photo is centered. I typically use this tactic to force the audience to concentrate on particular parts of the photograph. Some of my favorite techniques used to photograph are both large and small depths of field, worm’s eye view, night shots and close-ups. My work subconsciously reflects my views and interests as a person. After observing my portfolio one can determine that I have a love for the water, I enjoy the city life and I think it is important to step back and notice the simple things in life.
